Our Explorer Groups

Here’s a list of those expeditions from the Base Camp that we run ourselves – we call these our Explorer Groups. Many, but not all, take place on the second Sunday in the month as part of our Sunday Out programme. If you need any more detail about any Explorer Group, please contact the church office.

Toddler Group
Mondays during term-time, 9.45am – 11.15am.
Our Toddler Group meets at the United Reformed Church on the corner of Kineton Green Road and Brookvale Road in Olton (B92 7EB).  We have a structured morning of play for pre-school aged children, incorporating creative play, crafts and a whole host of toys. We stop for snacks followed by a story and finish with some musical play.

Knit & Natter
Mondays (except Bank Holidays), 7.30pm – 9.30pm
Everyone is welcome to the Branch for Knit and Natter – those who knit or sew, or just those who want a cup of tea, a homemade cake and a chat. The aim is simply to unwind and enjoy one another’s company.

Crossing Points
Monday evenings from March to October, 5.30 – 7.30pm; and Sundays Out all year round, 10.30am – 12.30pm
Crossing Points is our allotment project. We have a double plot at the Gospel Lane allotments and meet on Monday evenings to work the garden and to welcome people from Birmingham and Solihull’s asylum seeker and refugee community. As part of Sunday Out on the second Sunday of each month, we provide tea, coffee, cake and a meeting place at the allotments committee’s hut from 10.30am to 12.30pm with the purpose of getting to know the other allotment holders.

Guitar Live
Every second Tuesday in the month, 8.00pm til late.
Guitar Live is a group of guitarists of varying type, interest and ability who meet to learn from and perform for each other. We meet over a coffee at the Happy Heart cafe on Richmond Road in Olton (B92 7RP). Roughly speaking, we have a guest performer every other month – these have ranged from a blues guitarist to a sitar player – otherwise, it is open mic. Absolutely all standards are welcome to join us.

The Platform
The second Thursday of the month, 1.10 to 1.50pm
An informal gathering over lunch at Milan’s, 93 Newhall Street, B3 1LH, for those who work in the city centre who want a place to figure out how better to do life at work.

Craft Club
Every other Thursday, 7.30 to 9.30pm
An opportunity to learn a new craft or work on a project already in progress.

Crossroads Homeless Soup Run
Fourth Sunday of the month, but times vary according to which team you are part of.
Crossroads takes sandwiches, soup and other items to the homeless in Birmingham City Centre one Sunday evening a month as part of a city wide church project.

Walk, Eat and Talk
The fourth Tuesday of the month at 11am and the second Thursday at 2.30pm.
WEaT is a group for seniors who may be retired or have space in the week to meet for friendship, support and mutual encouragement. On the Tuesday we meet for coffee, a short easy walk and then lunch. On the Thursday afternoon we meet at The Branch to enjoy afternoon tea together.

Sunday Elsewhere (Sunday Out Explorer Group)
Every second Sunday in the month, 10.30am to set up, ready for an 11.00am start.
Sunday Elsewhere takes a brief worship service into a local care home and a retirement apartment complex. We have plenty of hymns, a brief message and some prayer together.

Families at the Park (Sunday Out Explorer Group)
Every second Sunday in the month, 2.00pm –  4.00pm.
We hire the Guide hut opposite Olton’s Jubilee Park on Brackley’s Way, B92 8QE and enjoy time together as families, with crafts, games, face painting, treasure hunts etc – inside or outside depending on the weather.  We do ask that children are accompanied by an adult at all times.

Cafe in the Park (Sunday Out Explorer Group)
Every second Sunday in the month, 2.30pm – 4.00pm.
We meet for crafts, games (for both young and old), chat, food and newspapers, but out in Hockley Heath at the Pavilion by the car park of the recreation ground. We aim especially to include families and others who live in the village.

Neighbours’ Brunch (Sunday Out Explorer Group)
Every second Sunday in the month, 10.30am.
We are two local families who open our homes to those who live on our streets, hoping to make connections and build community as we meet over brunch.

Community Chatter (Sunday Out Explorer Group)
Every second Sunday in the month, 11.00am – 12.30pm.
We meet at Langley Hall Social Club, Langley Hall Road, B92 7HE, to chat, drink coffee, study the Bible, meet local people and play games together.

C.S.I. – Community Support and Involvement (Sunday Out Explorer Group)
Every second Sunday in the month, 10.30am – 12.30pm
We meet at different venues to pick litter, paint fences, clear undergrowth… whatever jobs need doing to improve life in Olton. We work with the Council’s Neighbourhood Office who provide us with a job list and the necessary equipment.

Community Chaplaincy (Sunday Out Explorer Group)
Every second Sunday in the month, 10.30am – 12.30pm.
We meet at the Branch, 85 Warwick Road, B92 7HP and then set out to walk along and pray for a few particular roads in Olton – open to any opportunities God puts in our way.

Have I got news for you? (Sunday Out Explorer Group)
Every second Sunday in the month, 11.00am – 1.00pm
We meet at Happy Heart Cafe, Richmond Road, B92 7RP, to reflect on the news stories of the past week, sharing thoughts and views over brunch.

Sunday Brunch (Sunday Out Explorer Group)
Every second Sunday in the month, 10.30am – 12.30pm
We meet and eat at different venues in Solihull with the aim of providing a place of connection and welcome for those in the church whose partners do not share our faith.

Men United (Sunday Out Explorer Group)
Every second Sunday in the month, 7.45pm – 10.00pm (roughly – this can vary)
We are a group of guys who meet socially in a variety of settings which will hopefully appeal to men inside and outside the church.
